Welcome !

Lisennes is a family vineyard owned and managed for five generations of the Soubie family
Very near Bordeaux, this 55 hectare chateau and vineyard with it’s 15th and 18th century buildings reflects the spirit of how we manage Lisennes.
The vineyard is managed environmentally and the winemaking uses modern techniques that compliment traditional know-how. Thus our excellent wine reflects Lisennes unique situation and terroir.

With year-round opening, we welcome visitors to taste our range of wines.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux vineyards have three major regions separated by the rivers Garonne and Dordogne that join to create the Gironde estuary flowing North West into the Atlantic, so this area has a maritime climate.

  • The West area with the city of Bordeaux in the centre
  • The East with its principal town of Libourne
  • The central Entre Deux Mers, situated between the two rivers

These geographical areas make different styles of wine.
  • Cabernet-Sauvignon (red variety) is mainly planted to the West, but there are many notable white wines too.  Graves (just South of Bordeaux) is dry and made mainly from Sauvignon (white variety), and further South in Sauternes and Barsac they make sweet wines from the Sauvignon and Muscadelle varieties.
  • In the extensive Entre Deux Mers, red and white wines are made from these varieties, but on the hills facing Sauternes is Cadillac, Sainte Croix du Mont and Loupiac, all making excellent sweet wines in Entre Deux Mers.
  • To the East, in St Emilion and Pomerol, the main variety is Merlot.

At Lisennes

- 50% merlot that is early ripening and gives supple round wines.

- 30% Cabernet Franc, that produces very elegant tannins and fruity bouquet and a much sought after element in our blends.

- 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, a late ripener that produces young aromatic wine with a good ageing potential.

We are in the midst of replanting some areas and in about 2020 we shall have 56 hectares in production.  These new plantings are with 4000 vines per hectare.

The soil at Lisennes is mainly argilo-calcaire (loam mixed with chalk) with a little silex due to the proximity of the banks of the Garonne.  Because of this we have two main types of soil at Lisennes – those with fine and coarse silt, and loamy chalk.  The mix has excellent structure and vines thrive.

Our soil needs draining so several kilometres of perforated plastic pipes have been buried at 80cm below the surface everywhere.  These pipes take the excess water away to two lakes built in the 1970’s.
